Candle waxes, looked at fairly

In the market, the comparison between waxes is usually told as though one is good and the rest are bad. In reality each is strong in one respect, and a candlemaker chooses according to what they need.

The common types are soy wax, coconut wax, beeswax, paraffin wax and blended waxes. They differ in origin, melting point, ability to hold and release scent, and the surface they give once cooled.

Five waxes, each with its own character

  • Soy wax: from hydrogenated soybean oil, low melting point, slow burning, and the surface may not be perfectly flat after cooling.
  • Coconut wax: from coconut oil, soft, holds scent well, usually blended with another wax to firm it up.
  • Beeswax: made by bees, with a light natural honey smell, hard and long burning; its own smell can affect any scent added.
  • Paraffin wax: from petroleum, cheap, hard, gives a flat surface and releases scent strongly into a room.
  • Blended wax: two or more types mixed to take the strengths of each; most commercial candles today belong to this group.

Saying the right thing about soot and safety

There are many claims in the market that one wax is cleaner than another. We are not drawing comparative conclusions here, because the amount of smoke and the substances produced in burning depend heavily on the wick, the amount of scent, the shape of the vessel and whether the room is ventilated, not on the wax alone. A plant wax candle with an oversized wick still gives more smoke than a properly made paraffin one.

What is more useful for a user is three habits: trim the wick, burn in a ventilated room, and do not burn too long at a time.

What ZUNGZA uses and why

We use soy wax for our candle lines, because the low melting point suits cinnamon bark and concrete vessels, and because the slow burn lets the layer of bark warm gradually rather than being heated hard. This is a choice driven by our own material requirements, not a conclusion that other waxes are inferior.

A few questions you often send us

Which wax carries scent best

There is no general answer. Scent release depends on the wax and wick pairing, on the amount of scent and on the scent formula. Two jars of the same wax can smell very differently.

Why does the surface of a plant-wax candle look pitted

Because plant wax crystallises in its own way as it cools, and room temperature affects the result. That is a characteristic of the material rather than a fault, and one sufficiently long burn usually levels the surface again.

Which wax makes the jar easier to reuse

Plant wax is generally easier to clean because it is soft and dissolves faster in hot water. With a hard wax, the familiar method is to stand the vessel in hot water until the wax softens and then lift it out.
