REED DIFFUSER

ZUNGZA / STORY

How a scent stays in a room

The oil travels up the grain of the wooden reed and into the air, steadily all day, with no flame and no electricity. We make diffusers so that a house has a familiar smell from the moment you open the door.

ZUNGZA room diffusers

A diffuser works very quietly. Oils blended by zungza travel up the grain of the wooden reeds and into the air, steadily all day, with no flame and no electricity. That makes it right for the places you leave and come back to many times a day: a bedroom, a study, a reading corner or an entrance hall.

We make diffusers so that a house has a familiar smell. A familiar smell is what tells us we have arrived home, right from the moment we open the door.

Where to place it and how to flip the reeds

When you first set it up, put all the reeds into the bottle and leave them for a few hours so the oil can soak up the shaft. Turning the reeds after that will bring the scent out more clearly.

How often to turn them depends on the room. Somewhere damp and cool the scent stays longer, so you can turn them less often. Somewhere dry and airy the scent travels faster, so turn them a little more often. In cold weather scent usually moves slowly; in hot weather it moves fast. Just smell the room and decide, because your own nose is the most accurate measure.

The number of reeds is another way to adjust. A small room needs only a few; a larger room takes more and the scent will be fuller. Place the bottle where a little air passes, out of direct sun and away from a strong draught blowing straight into the neck of the bottle.

Diffuser, candle or essential oil

A diffuser holds an even level of scent for many days, which suits you when you want a steady base note through a whole room. Scented candle for a stretch of time with intent, when you sit down and want to mark a few hours as your own. Essential oil is the most flexible: use it with a burner, a mist diffuser, or a piece of scented wood in a drawer.

Many people use all three at different times of day, and that is how we use them at the workshop.

Quick questions about ZUNGZA reed diffusers

How do I use a ZUNGZA reed diffuser?

Wooden reeds stand in the bottle. The oil travels up the grain of the wood and out into the air, so a diffuser works without flame or electricity.

How often should I flip the reeds?

This changes with the region and with the temperature and humidity of the room. A damp cool room holds scent longer, so turn them less often; a dry airy room takes turning a little more often.

How many reeds should I use?

A small room usually needs only a few reeds. A larger room takes more so the scent is fuller. You can add or ease off gradually until it feels right.

Where should I place the diffuser?

Somewhere a little air passes, out of direct sun and away from a strong draught blowing straight into the neck of the bottle. A bedside shelf, a desk and an entrance hall all work well.

What oil is inside a ZUNGZA diffuser?

Essential oils blended by zungza; each scent keeps to no more than three main notes, drawn from the forests and mountains of Vietnam.

How long does a diffuser last?

Three years from the date of production while the seal is intact. Once opened, how long the scent lasts in the bottle depends on the number of reeds and how airy the room is.
