There is one thing many of you tell us alike. The candle jar smells very clearly while it is burning, but half an hour after it is out the room is almost back to how it was. This has little to do with the jar; it has to do with the room, because scent is molecules flying in the air and the room decides how long they stay.
We write this from what we have tested in our own workshop, where candles burn every day and each season gives a different result. A few very small things, done regularly, will change entirely how a scent stays in your home.
The first fifteen minutes are the most important stretch
When you light a candle, the wax needs about fifteen minutes for its surface to heat evenly before the scent begins to come up to its rhythm. If in that stretch the window is open and the fan is running, most of what has just been released will go straight outside. So what we do is keep the door closed for the first fifteen minutes, letting the room gain a base layer of scent, and only then open it slightly for the air to move gently.
A burn of two to three hours gives the scent time to settle into the soft things in the room. That is exactly where a scent stays longest: in the curtain, the rug, the cushion on the chair, the fabric over the seat. A room with textiles holds scent considerably longer than a room of nothing but brick and glass, and this is why the same candle jar gives two very different results in two homes.
Where you place it does a great deal too. Stand the jar at the middle of the room, on a surface at about table height, away from the air-conditioning vent and away from a door that is often opened. In the middle of the room the scent travels out evenly in every direction instead of being pulled along one current.
Small things to do before and after lighting
Before lighting, trim the cotton wick to about five millimetres. A neat wick gives a small, even flame, the wax burns at the right rhythm, and the scent comes up steadily through the whole burn. With a new jar, on the first burn let it go until the wax melts evenly out to the wall of the cup, usually about two hours, because that stretch lays the ground for every burn afterwards.
A clean room holds scent better. Dust and old smells take up room in the air, so in the morning open the doors to let the room change its air once, vacuum the rugs and wash the curtains by season. After that, the scent you bring in will sit on a clear base, and you will hear it far more distinctly.
And for the stretches when you are out of the house, a reed diffuser keeps the base of scent for the room. It works slowly and evenly all day, and when you come home the room already has its scent. Turn the reeds when the scent seems fainter than you like, and that rhythm changes with region, with temperature and with the humidity of each season.

A draughty room, or one with few textiles, holds less scent. Try closing the door for the first fifteen minutes and burning a full two hours each round; the scent will stay noticeably longer.
Should I open the window while burning a candle
Keep the door closed for the first fifteen minutes, then open it slightly so the air moves gently. That way keeps the scent and still lets the room breathe.
Which room holds scent best
A room with curtains, rugs, cushions and fabric-covered seating, because soft things hold scent longest. In a room of much brick and glass the scent goes faster, and then a diffuser helps a great deal.
