The same candle jar burned in Hanoi in March and in Hanoi in November is two different experiences. It is not the candle that changed, it is the room.
Three things decide it: heat makes the fragrance molecules evaporate faster, so the scent rises quickly and also disperses quickly; high humidity keeps the scent hanging in the air longer; and moving air, whether natural or from an air conditioner, carries the scent out of the room before it can fill it.
Reading your own room
- A closed room with little air movement and high humidity: the scent rises slowly but comes on thick and stays a long time. Burn for less time.
- A room with the air conditioner running constantly: the scent is pulled away quickly. Put the jar well away from the airflow, never under the vent.
- A room with a ceiling fan: the scent is mixed evenly very fast and reads weaker even though the amount has not changed.
- A room with windows open at both ends: there is a cross-draught and the scent barely settles. Close one side while you want to hold the scent.
- A room made too dry by a heater or dehumidifier: the scent reads harsh at the opening and disappears quickly at the end.
You still have to ventilate
One point needs saying plainly: holding the scent matters less than keeping the air clean. When you burn a candle, burn incense or cook, the room needs a way for old air to leave. The simplest approach is to leave a door ajar or run the ventilation while burning, then close up after you put it out so the remaining scent stays in the room.
Testing in the workshop, we have found the most pleasant result comes from burning a candle in a room that has been ventilated beforehand, rather than in a room shut up all day. This is a ZUNGZA observation and also what we usually advise customers to do.
A simple sequence for an evening
Open the window for ten minutes. Close it, turn on a warm lamp. Burn the candle for thirty minutes somewhere without a draught. Put it out and leave the room as it is. The remaining scent usually holds for another one to two hours, and you do not need to burn longer to get that result.

Why scent seems stronger in summer
Because high temperature makes the fragrance evaporate faster, so you receive more of it in the first fifteen minutes. The answer is to burn for a shorter time, or to choose a scent with woody and green notes rather than sweet ones.
Does a humidifier make scent last longer
Usually yes, slightly, because humidity helps the scent stay suspended longer. But if the room is already humid, adding more moisture creates the conditions for mould, and a damp smell will overwhelm whatever scent you wanted.
Should a candle sit near a window to scent the whole house
It is not a good idea, for two reasons. A draught makes the flame burn unevenly and easily causes black soot, and most of the scent will go outside rather than inside. To carry scent further, place the candle centrally and open the room door rather than the window.
