The bedroom and the living room need two different kinds of scent

These two rooms do two different jobs, so the scent in them should be different too. The bedroom is where you stay longest while moving least, whereas the living room is where people walk in and walk out.

In the bedroom the scent should be close and light. You lie only a metre or two from the candle jar, breathing it in continuously for hours, so a strong scent becomes heavy very quickly. We usually suggest CHAMPACA with champaca flower, sweet and round, or APPLE with green apple, clear and thin. Anyone who likes a cool direction can choose NUI NON, leaning towards bergamot, lavender and cedar.

The rhythm of use in a bedroom is different too. Light the candle about an hour before sleep, then put it out before getting into bed. For anyone who wants the scent to stay all night without a flame, a one hundred millilitre diffuser on a high shelf is the neater way.

The living room needs a more open scent

A living room is wide, usually open to the kitchen, and people come and go. The scent here needs to be a little clearer so it can still be noticed after a few minutes. CITRUS with sweet orange and lemon opens brightly and disperses quickly, suiting the daytime. RUNG GIA, leaning towards cinnamon, black pepper and agarwood, is stronger and goes very well with a house of much wood, especially in the evening.

As for the cup, we often advise choosing the two hundred and twenty gram concrete cup for the living room, because it is heavy, stands firmly on a shelf where many people pass, and burns fifty to fifty-five hours.

A few figures to work out in advance

One candle jar suits a room of about fifteen to twenty square metres, and the scent becomes clear after about fifteen minutes. An ordinary bedroom sits comfortably within that, so one jar is enough. For a wider living room, stand the candle jar in the middle of the room rather than burning two jars at either end.

The cinnamon bark of one hundred and twenty-five grams has a lid, and that lid makes it very fitting for a bedroom because you can close it after blowing the flame out. The two hundred gram glass cup and the two hundred and twenty gram concrete cup lean more towards the living room: one light and clear so the flame does the rest, the other heavy in the hand and good at sheltering from draughts.

A few questions you often send us

Which scent suits a bedroom

CHAMPACA or APPLE for a light direction, NUI NON for a cool one.

Should a candle be left burning while asleep

Put the candle out before getting into bed. If you want the scent to stay longer, use a reed diffuser.

Which cup should the living room have

The two hundred and twenty gram concrete cup, because it is heavy and stands firmly, or the glass cup if you like the flame coming through amber glass.

You can see the directions of scent on the scented candles page, and read more about the rhythm of burning in the instructions for use.
