Keeping a candle jar, a bottle of essential oil and a bottle of perfume

All three fear the same thing: the sun. Direct sunlight on a candle cup or a bottle of essential oil makes the scent fade noticeably faster, and with wax the sun also softens the surface and then deforms it.

So the best place in your home is a cool shelf, away from a sunny window, away from beside the stove and away from a damp bathroom. Our candles and essential oils have a shelf life of three years from the date of production, while perfume has a shelf life of six months to a year.

With the candle jar cinnamon cup, close the lid once the cup has cooled completely. The lid keeps the scent for next time and keeps dust from settling on the wax surface. The glass cup and concrete cup ranges are left open, so if it has been a while since you used one, lay a thin cloth over the top.

Before and after each burn

Before lighting, trim the wick to about five millimetres and lift off the blackened wick tip on the wax surface. After putting it out, let the cup cool where it stands and wait until the wax has set completely before moving it. Wax that is still liquid and gets shifted leaves an uneven surface, and later burns follow that unevenness.

A cooled wax surface is usually a little off in colour and speckled with small holes. This is normal for a soy wax candle; use it as usual.

The essential oil bottle and the diffuser bottle

The fifteen millilitre essential oil bottle should be capped tightly after each use, and stood upright rather than laid flat. One bottle has about three hundred drops, enough for thirty to sixty uses.

The one hundred millilitre diffuser bottle should stand fixed in one place, away from anywhere a draught blows straight at it, because draught makes the liquid evaporate faster. Turn the wooden reeds when the scent in the room fades, because every home has its own temperature and humidity.

The perfume bottle

Perfume keeps best in its box, somewhere cool and dark. Avoid leaving the bottle in a car or on a table beside a window, because constantly changing temperature is the condition that alters a scent fastest. A fifty millilitre bottle gives about six hundred sprays.

A few questions you often send us

Is it a problem if a candle is kept a long time before use

The shelf life is three years from the date of production, kept somewhere cool and out of direct sun.

Should a candle be kept in the bathroom

A bathroom is damp and full of steam; we would advise choosing a drier, airier shelf.

How do I clean the wax left at the bottom of the cup

Pour hot water into the cup, wait for the wax to float up and lift it out, then wash the cup as you would any household item.
