A wooden surface that stays beautiful for years usually owes it not to a great deal of care but to a few correct things done regularly.
Those three things are: wiping with a soft barely damp cloth and drying at once; re-oiling on a cycle if the surface is finished with oil or wax; and dealing with water marks early, before the water has time to pass through the finish into the grain.
First, know which kind of wooden surface you have
Put one drop of water somewhere nobody looks. If the drop stays round and the wood does not change colour, the surface has a sealed coating such as gloss lacquer or a polymer finish. If the drop spreads and that spot darkens and then dries back to its old colour, the surface is finished with oil or wax.
The two need different care. With a sealed surface you care for the coating, not the wood; oil applied on top only sits there and collects dust. Oil-finished wood needs regular replenishment, because the old oil layer is gradually wiped away with every cleaning.
The weekly job and the job on a cycle
- Weekly: dust with a soft dry cloth, following the grain. If you need a damp cloth, wring it out thoroughly and dry the surface again at once.
- Every few months for oiled wood: apply a very thin coat of conditioning oil, let it soak in, then wipe off all the excess. Excess left on will stay tacky and hold dust.
- Always: use coasters for cold glasses, hot cups and plant pots. This is the most effective prevention there is.
- Never use: strong cleaners, alcohol, glass cleaner, or spray polish on oiled wood.
Water marks and heat marks
A faint white mark is usually water trapped in the finish that has not reached the wood. On oiled or waxed wood, rubbing very gently along the grain with a soft cloth and a little conditioning oil usually fades the mark after a few goes. A black mark means the water has reached the grain and usually cannot be wiped away; that spot needs sanding and refinishing, which is a job for a woodworker.
For a ring left by a hot cup, wait until the surface is completely cool before doing anything. Working on it while still hot usually distorts the finish further.

Can cooking oil be used to nourish wood
Not with ordinary cooking oil, because most of it never fully dries and will develop a smell over time. If you want a simple option for a wooden surface that touches food, purpose-made wood conditioning oils and food-safe waxes are the safer direction.
Does a small crack mean the piece is finished
Most small cracks along the grain are a normal response of wood to humidity and do not affect the structure. What to do is stabilise the humidity around it. A crack across the grain, or a split at a load-bearing point, is a different matter and should be looked at by someone who knows.
How often should wood be oiled
There is no general interval, because it depends on use. The practical test is one drop of water: if it soaks in almost immediately, the oil layer has thinned and it is time to replenish.
