Vietnamese cinnamon and its growing regions

In the workshop, when a new batch of cinnamon bark arrives, the first thing is not to weigh it but to break off a piece and smell it. The same species from two growing areas already gives two smells different enough to tell apart.

The cinnamon grown in Vietnam belongs to the cassia group, different from Ceylon cinnamon. The areas most often mentioned are Yen Bai in the north, Thanh Hoa in the north central region, Quang Nam with the Tra My area and Quang Ngai with the Tra Bong area. Differences in smell and in bark thickness come from soil, altitude, rainfall and the age of the tree.

Why the age of the tree matters

Cinnamon bark thickens with the years, and thick bark is the part usable for more purposes. On a young tree the bark is thin, breaks easily and will not hold the shape of a quill. On a tree of many years the bark is thick, curves to a particular degree and carries a clearer woody base in its smell.

The material we use for the cinnamon bark vessel line comes from trees of about fifteen years in the Tra My and Tra Bong areas. That figure is ZUNGZA's own data about our own supply, not a standard for cinnamon in general.

Four things that make regions differ

  • Soil and altitude: affect growth rate and bark thickness.
  • Rainfall and hours of sunshine: affect how the tree accumulates its aromatic compounds.
  • Age of the tree at harvest: decides the thickness and the curve of the length of bark.
  • Local peeling and drying practice: two areas with different customs will give different material even from the same species.

No numerical comparison here

We are not giving figures for essential oil content or for output by region. Those numbers change from batch to batch, with the method of analysis and with each reporting period, so repeating an odd figure without naming a source misleads more than it helps. If you need data for work, look it up in specialist publications or ask for the analysis certificate of the actual batch you buy.

A few questions you often send us

Which region has the best-smelling cinnamon

There is no general answer, because the most fragrant depends on which note you need. Some areas give a clearer sweetness, others a clearer woody and dry-spice character. The right approach is to test against your intended use rather than hunt for a single best region.

Is Vietnamese cinnamon exported in quantity

Cinnamon is one of Vietnam's familiar export crops and is present in many markets. We are not giving specific figures because they change from year to year.

Why does one lot of bark smell weaker than another

It may come from the age of the tree, the harvest timing, or the drying and storage. In practice, the post-harvest stage is the most common cause and also the least noticed.
